- Rough Draft - A nice, lightweight text editor capable of being run off a USB stick. Also, download Wordweb to get thesaurus and spell-check functionality. It will integrate with Rough Draft.
- Open Office - a complete office suite
- Star Office - a commercially supported version of Open Office
- ABI Word - nice, low-overhead word processor
- Jarte - a free word processor based on the Wordpad, integrates with Wordweb
- Write Monkey - A minimalist text editor like Dark Room, but with a wider array of features. (thanks, Joshua!)
- Ultra Edit - A very well rounded text editor with features built for those frustrated with the writing and editing limitations of the more standard programs. Bonus for web design is the ability to do column edits!

MACs
- Scrivener-this is more a writer's IDE than a word processor, but it does have a pretty nifty word processor
- Open Office-This complete office suite is also available for Macs.
LINUX
